Session: Delegation Basics Walkthrough, March 2025

I had delegated SOL three weeks earlier but my wallet still showed “activating.” I could not tell if something was wrong or if I just needed to wait. Margaret pulled up my stake account on Solana Beach and pointed to the activation epoch — I was one epoch away from active status. She also showed me how to set a calendar reminder for when rewards would start. The written follow-up arrived the next morning with my account address and the key fields highlighted.

Session: Validator Overview & Comparison, May 2025

I shortlisted four validators based on a ranking site. David walked through commission history for each and flagged that one had raised commission from 5% to 8% two months prior. That detail was not visible on the ranking page I used. We spent extra time on skip rates, which I had ignored entirely. I left with a comparison table I could revisit on my own. The session ran about ten minutes over, which was fine. I would have liked the printed summary the same day rather than two days later.

Written brief: Three-validator comparison, June 2025

I requested a written comparison because I am not comfortable on video calls. The brief arrived in six working days with epoch-by-epoch uptime charts for each validator. One validator I was leaning toward had three downtime incidents in the past quarter that I had not found myself. The brief did not tell me which to pick — it laid out the trade-offs and let me decide. Worth the £95, though the deposit requirement upfront was slightly inconvenient.

Session: Staking Reference Session (in-person), July 2025

Visited the office on Test Lane for a session about restaking rewards. David explained the difference between leaving rewards in the stake account versus withdrawing to my main wallet, with numbers from my actual account. The office is small but quiet — good environment for concentrating. Parking nearby was limited, so I took the tube. Minor inconvenience, not their fault.

Session: Rewards Mechanics Explained, August 2025

My rewards seemed lower than the wallet’s estimated APY suggested. Margaret showed me that my validator’s skip rate had spiked during two recent epochs, which reduced my share. She also explained that the wallet’s APY estimate assumes perfect validator performance, which is rarely the case. I now check skip rate monthly. The session was shorter than expected — finished in about 30 minutes — but I got what I needed.

Extended case note

First-time delegator in Leeds

A reader contacted us in April 2025 after purchasing SOL on an exchange and attempting to delegate through the exchange’s custodial staking product. They wanted to understand what “custodial staking” meant compared to self-custody delegation.

Over a 60-minute reference session, we covered:

  1. How custodial staking holds SOL on the exchange’s behalf
  2. What a self-custody stake account looks like on-chain
  3. The trade-offs between convenience and control
  4. How to verify whether delegated stake is actually active

The reader decided to keep a portion in custodial staking for simplicity and delegate a smaller amount self-custody to learn the mechanics. They booked a follow-up Delegation Basics session six weeks later to walk through creating their own stake account.

This case illustrates our typical pattern: an initial broad session, then a focused follow-up once the reader is ready to take a specific action.
